RESEARCH

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is home to a successful and recognized research department, with numerous connections to international industry. There are over 200 graduate and 30 undergraduates working in our research labs, funded by over $13 million annually in government and industry grants. We have four Canadian Research Chairs, as well as five industry-funded research chairs.

Our research spans the fields of applied solid mechanics, biomechanics & medical devices, computational engineering, energy & environment, engineering education, fluid mechanics, manufacturing automation & robotics, mechanics & instrumentation, and naval architecture & marine engineering.

APPLIED SOLID MECHANICS

The Applied Solid Mechanics area pursues fundamental research on mechanics of solids, materials and structures using modern analytical, computational, and experimental tools.

BIOMECHANICS & MEDICAL DEVICES

Faculty in the Biomechanics and Medical Devices research area develop engineering techniques and technologies to investigate biological systems and address healthcare needs.

COMPUTATIONAL ENGINEERING

The faculty in the Computational Engineering area develop and use mathematical models and numerical simulation tools for problems in fluid and solid mechanics.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

The Energy & Environment area conducts research to support Canada and the world in meeting energy needs without causing severe impacts on the environment and human health.

ENGINEERING EDUCATION

The Engineering Education area aims to develop, implement and disseminate innovative, evidence-based teaching and learning strategies to help engineering students achieve optimal learning outcomes.

FLUID MECHANICS

A traditional subject in mechanical engineering, research in fluid mechanics remains vital today.

MANUFACTURING AUTOMATION & ROBOTICS

This area conducts research in modeling manufacturing processes, CAD/CAM, machine health monitoring and diagnostics, robotics, machine learning and industrial automation.

MECHATRONICS & INSTRUMENTATION

The members of this area research sensors and actuators, instrumentation and control, MEMS/NEMS, multiagent systems, deep learning, intelligent systems, CNC design and ultraprecision engineering.

NAVAL ARCHITECTURE & MARINE ENGINEERING

The area includes an integrative multi-disciplinary team of experts and researchers focusing on design and engineering analysis of marine vessels and offshore platforms.
